M.A.C SS09 launch

“… Make-up that appears organic… About redefining feminity… About experimenting with the boundaries of what is beauty…”

C.Dinnigan_2216_SS09_PW Diesel.Black.Gold_2038_SS09_PW

If I wasn’t so completely obsessed with words, lyric and rhyme, I think I would have loved a career in hair and make-up artistry. One of my absolute favourite places in the whole world is going to visit Lauren – my hairdresser. My second favourite place is the M.A.C store in the V&A Waterfront. I love the way the little glass jars hold all those rich pigments and how they look like they’re dancing in the lights.

I’m not afraid to experiment – I welcome blueberry shadow on my lids and chunky blonde steaks in my hair. Which is why I love M.A.C: deeply and irrevocably so. There’s a way to wear everything without looking naff. Betsy Johnson knows it. And this upcoming Spring/Summer 09, M.A.C knows it too. They’re welcoming all kinds of colour with their flip-top, multi-compartments beauty palettes and 204 brushes. It’s time to get your paint on.

As the world sees itself collide with ideas of technology versus nature, the make-up world is following suit by combining the very organic with the very synthetic. You’re going to see colours clash, collide and blend like never before. Think pink and yellow shades around the eye, lavender lips, hospital blues and sickly greens. Colours melt and smudge simply perfectly as if you were walking the streets on a humid night out. It’s out with the shadows and in with chunky, extra-carbon black liner and creamy shadows.

Then there’s the translucent skin: bye-bye Brazil, hello Ireland. Skin shines in all the right places with shots of metallic and then is simple and matt elsewhere. Cheek bones are sharp. Eye brows are full and almost unkept – they’re Brooke Shields in the early ’90s. And lips – they’re punchy, extroverted and punk in Russian Red or M.A.C’s brand new Black Night lipstick.

Here are the five looks of the M.A.C SS 09 collection:

1.    Artifice

G.Pugh_2078_SS09_PWx3

Iceberg_2096_SS09_PW

The idea here is finding beauty in the bizarre and unconventional. If make-up were fabric, it’s about a raw edge that says ‘No’ to a hemline. It’s all about ultra matt skin, with a sharp signature be it a strong brow or gawk at me lips – and that means a strong colour or no colour at all, think stone taupe for the latter. Cheek bones are chalky and accentuated. Nothing is off limits here. Think a child who’s discovered make-up for the first time to a professional who’s experimenting with synthetic, unnatural beauty. At the Gareth Pugh show, make-up artists built 3-D eye liner that literally made models appear to have cats’ eyes. It’s the complete opposite of our traditional thoughts of beauty, but there’s something truly gorgeous about it.

2.    Hydraluminous

A.Dell.Acqua_2007_SS09_PWE.Pucci_2094_SS09_PW 1x2

Your skin is a reflective surface, so let it shine. Eyes shimmer in smoky kohl and angel dust gold. Lips are completely naked and simply get a swipe of concealer. To achieve this look you need to start off with really moisturized skin. Take inspiration from nature when it comes to this one and think fresh, spring dew. Add a great dollop of M.A.C Strobe cream to really pump skin up to a shiny luster. Then blend, blend, blend until it all looks modern, natural and others mistake you for a make-up free zone.

3.    Black to earth

ashish_2050 1x3Temperly.London_2095_SS09_PWx2

Just like the opposing voices siding on either end of the current environmental debate, there’s nothing quiet about this season’s smoky eye. China’s sooty skies is where it’s at. Eyes get blacked out and then polished all the way up to the brow with mineral shades, cream textures and melted liners. Then kick-up the sex appeal with pushed out, sharp-winged eyes. The rock goddess just walked into the room, and everyone else knows it. If you’re really, really good at this, here’s the ideal look to achieve: it’s as if you’ve just done your sexiest, fiercest eyes and then stood with your face over a steaming kettle. There’s a slight D.I.Y effect to this look, but there’s a little drama there too.

4.    Revolutionary nature

M.Cheap.Chic_2001_SS09_PW 1x2DKNY_2067_SS09_PW

Hush people, the tribal princess is having a moment. She’s natural, but she’s upgraded. She’s innocently glowing thanks to a “flushed from within” effect gained from applying blush and shimmer directly over foundation before powdering the skin. The creamiest foundations, colours and blushes are used to make skin look as natural as a swept up sea shell on the beach.

5.    Tender tone

Aquascutum_2171_SS09_PWZ.Posen_2135_SS09_PW

Summer is all about the beach… And ice-cream! M.A.C visits the ice cream parlour from your dreams and creates sugar and candy for the eyes in pastels that instantly transform you into the cherub who hit studio 54. There are soft washes in lilac, candy floss pink, peach sorbet, pistachio green and peach yogurt. Lips kiss and tell in lavender and violet. It’s a little futuristic when paired with silver shadow dabbed in the inner corners of the eyes. Try marshmallow pink on your upper lids and soft yellow blended into your upper cheek bones and under the eye, for a fun summer day look. It’s fallen fairy. Marie Antoinette in her teens… Long live the rainbow child.

Place: Bell-Roberts Gallery, Fairweather House, Woodstock
Make-up artist: Lesley Keane. She’s Irish, so naturally everyone loved her. And she’s worked on Erin O’ Connor, who I absolutely adore.
Food and drinks: Multi-coloured bottles of vitamin water – it’s natural, but it’s synthetic. Clever huh? Mini snack platters featured mini-fillet steaks, Vietnamese spring rolls filled with lots of crunch and avo, crostini topped with salmon… There’s was more, but that’s all I tried I’m afraid. 🙂
Goodie bag: If you don’t want to be ill for the rest of day, skip this part. I received 21 items of gorgeous new make-up. From foundation, to strobe cream to liners of every kind, two kinds of mascara, mineralize blush and the most perfect Marilyn Monroe red lipstick. I did warn you. Plus we got a book documenting all the trends. It’s so beautiful, it doubles up as a coffee table book.

Thank you M.A.C. It was truly special and a wonderful surprise. A few of my colleagues and my mom are thrilled too… I’m a nice person 🙂

Trenery – The Launch

Trenery-02Trenery-03

Driving to the Trenery launch at The Runway in Woodstock, I could feel that I was half way through 2009. As the years go by, I’m starting to realize what my mother has always told me: The older you get, the faster the years go by. I’ve been so busy this year – my life has been a clutter of deadlines, meetings, emergencies, flat tyres and Italian lessons.

Walking into the venue I felt as if I had been instantly transported to a swish loft somewhere in Manhattan (I have an absolute obsession with New York). The delicate flutes of champagne sparkled in the overhead lights and the perfect positioning of green shrubs offset the simplistic modern surroundings.  Ooooo, I was loving this already.

Trenery is the older sister of the trendier, younger Country Road. Developed by the same creative team, Trenery is for the woman or man who is looking for classic, sophisticated style. A luxury brand with a strong focus on exceptional quality and impeccable detailing: the perfect slouchy fit, a raw cut edge or the way that silk shirt fits just so. And even though, make no mistake, you’ll pay for the quality, you’re not coughing up the same amount of cash you would at an exclusive boutique store.

Trenery-04Trenery-05

The creative team have pitched the label at the 40+ market. Not a chance. Teens are going to flock to the mid-thigh shorts, leather sandals and pumps. So are those in their twenties and thirties. In all honesty though, Trenery’s men’s line is swish and very Thesen Island, but not very inspiring. However, I could write for days about their women’s line.

The first Spring/Summer 09 collection will launch in Woolworths stores on 20 August. And let me tell you, if you’re after modern, classic items that are trendy but will never date, Trenery is your dream wardrobe: the beige trench, the perfect LBD, slouchy pants (in black, teal, white, beige), a selection of fitted white shirts and light, distressed Ts. There’s also a selection of leather bags, belts, gladiator sandals and pumps to add to and complete your very chic look.

I love what I’ve seen, but I’m interested to see how Trenery are going to grow their brand in the future. How many basics are there and once you own them all what more is there to shop for? But I’m getting one too many seasons ahead of myself. Right now, start saving. ‘Cause I can promise you one thing, come August – you’re going to want to shop!

Place: The Runway, Fairweather House (Woodstock, CT)

Food: Oh my gosh. The food was incredible! Oysters with a dash of sweet chilli,  sesame-encrusted seared tuna skewers, crostini topped with cream cheese and wrapped with salmon and avo and mini meatballs with fruit chutney. There were also apple crisps (I couldn’t stop after the first one), huge bowels of macadamia nuts and most delicious of all – ginger and pistachio biscotti topped with brie. To.die.for.

Drinks: Champers and a selection of fruit juices and soft drinks.

The crowd: Need I say? Fashionistas and media galore.

Need-to-know information: Trenery will replace Woolworths’ current W Collection.

The genius that is the brand Jimmy Choo, no longer only make shoes that you’re ready to weep over. No, they’ve taken drooling to the next level. They’ve created an eyewear range of sunnies that are so beautiful, so stylish it honestly hurts to look knowing that for most US$311.33 is just ever so slightly out of our ression price range.

But we can always look.

Who’s your stig?

I hate male sports. There I said it. I think rugby is the most bizarre game in the world. How anyone can find men running after a ball on a field exciting is simply beyond me. I’m not that girl who wears Springbok T-shirts and knows the name of the squad or even finds anyone in the squad even remotely attractive. Francois Steyn… Are you kidding me!? And I just had to ask five people in the office for his name. That’s how bad I am. But cars. I like cars. A lot.

Did you know that 42% of Top Gears’ audience is women? I’m part of the 42%. If you’re starting to wonder what the point of this blog post is, here it is.

The unsolvable 21st century question of “Who exactly is the stig?” has been answered: It’s none other than Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

I love my job, but there are some days when I truly do love it more than others.

M.A.C presents...

M.A.C presents...

Like today for instance when I realised that next week, I head to two ultra glam launches: One for the brand new Trenery collection that Woolworths are soon to be stocking in eight of their nationwide stores and the second for the SS09 M.A.C make-up collection. The invitation reads: M.A.C presents SS09 High-tech natural, tribal beauties, mussed-up smoulder, tender pastels and unconventional colour

Am I excited? Like you have no idea! Shall I blog about both? You bet!

marion and lindie

While those events are invite-only, there are two events that I can let you in on that are available to all. First up, gorgeous boutique store Marion and Lindie kick off their sale which starts tomorrow (18 June). Then Esprit, one of my favourite urban-casual wear brands, starts their sale on 24 June.

PS. My mom’s in London at the moment and she called to tell me that fashion on the high-street is super feminine: think delicate fabrics like chiffon, ’60s shift dresses and elegant, chandelier earrings. Dreamy!

Emma Watson: The new face of Burberry

Emma Watson: The new face of Burberry

I wonder if Emma ever believed she would become the leading lady of one of the world’s most successful fantasy tales. I wonder if she ever lay awake at night lost in thought that one day she would grace the covers of magazines and be the envy of thousands of women, as she’s preened and groomed as the new face of Burberry – beautifully shot by the genius Mario Testino.

This is the life of Emma Watson, 19-year-old actress whose best known for her role as Hermonie Granger in the Harry Potter movie installments. She assumes her darker, slick-sophisticated look with all the charm that one would expect when decked out head-to-toe in Burberry.

Am I jealous? Green, let me tell you. Christopher Bailey send a little love this way.
